Round ’em up for rodeo

More than 100 youngsters from five islands will gather for the 10th Annual Hawaii High School Rodeo Finals at Paniolo Park in Waimea June 11 to 14.

The rodeo is the concluding event of "Old Hawaii on Horseback," a five-week paniolo celebration.

"Our keiki and high school rodeos are every bit as professional and exciting as professional rodeo . . . the kids don't get issued smaller bulls," director DeeDee Keakealani said.

On June 12, contestants go the first round in activities including Saddle and Bareback Bronco riding, Steer Wrestling, Calf Roping and Bull Riding. Interviews and modeling for the High School Rodeo Queen contest will also be held.

The final rounds for all competitive events take place on June 14, in which contestants vie for state awards and a spot in the National High School Rodeo Finals in Gilette, Wyo., July 20 to 27.

A $5 gate donation will help defray costs for national finalists.
