Eddie Maruyama, the only Oahu Interscholastic Association coach to win back-to-back boys' state basketball championships, said last night he is leaving the Moanalua High School program.

"It's time for a change for the program, and for my personal life," Maruyama said. "But I 'm not closing the door on anything in the future."

Maruyama, 36, said he will continue to teach health and physical education at Moanalua.

He and his wife, Tami, have a 3-12-year-old son, Drew. They recently bought a home in Moanalua Valley.

In nine years as head coach at Moanalua, Maruyama coached the Menehunes to two state championships (1996, 1997), an Oahu Interscholastic Association title (1990) and six Western Division championships.

Moanalua was unseeded entering the 1996 and '97 state tournaments and had to win four games in four nights each year for the title.

"He brought real leadership to the huddle. He knew other coaches' tendencies and his game preparation was excellent," said Richard Pagan, who will succeed Maruyama as head coach. "He was always coaching down to the final possession."

Pagan, 45, assisted Maruyama the past two years. Prior to that, he coached the junior varsity to four straight division titles and one league championship. He also coached the Moanalua girls' junior varsity team to a division title this year.
