Hawaiian Airlines has decided to make its Seattle-Maui service a year-round business, responding to tourist demand from the Pacific Northwest for direct service to the Valley Isle.

Starting Sept. 8, Hawaiian will fly four round-trip flights a week on the route, using a 304-passenger DC-10 aircraft with 270 seats in coach and 34 in first class.

Flight 23 on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays will leave Seattle at 10:45 a.m. and the return flight will leave Kahului Airport at 2:25 p.m., stopping at Honolulu before continuing on to Seattle.

The airline said flight times will change slightly on Oct. 25 due to the daylight savings time change on the mainland.

John Happ, senior vice president for marketing and sales, said Maui is Hawaii's second-most popular destination after Oahu and demand is growing.

Hawaiian previously offered the direct Seattle-Maui service only in the winter months, alternating it with nonstop service between San Francisco and Maui in the summer.

Hawaiian uses a fleet of 12 wide-body DC-10s in mainland-Hawaii service and in flights between Honolulu and the South Pacific destinations of American Samoa and Tahiti.

It also has 13 DC-9s in interisland service, making 150 flights a day.
