Musashimaru tops
Akebono, ties for lead

TOKYO -- Musashimaru defeated grand champion Akebono today in a battle of wrestlers from Hawaii and stayed in a tie for the lead at 10-3 with two days left in the Summer Grand Sumo Tournament.

Grand champion Takanohana also lost as yesterday's seven-way logjam at the top was reduced to a three-way tie among champions Musashimaru and Wakanohana and lower-ranked Dejima.

Musashimaru, or Fiamalu Penitani, attacked Akebono, or Chad Rowan, with a series of hand thrusts, then toppled him sideways.

Akebono shares a 9-4 record with five other wrestlers, including Takanohana.

In the 26-member juryo division, Yamato, or George Kalima from Hawaii, was pushed out by Misugisato for his 12th defeat against only one victory.
