TOKYO -- Yokozunas (grand champions) Akebono and Takanohana both won their bouts today, staying in a tie for the lead that was reduced to seven wrestlers with three days left in the 15-day Summer Grand Sumo Tournament. Two Hawaii sumotori
in 8-3 logjamTen men had been tied for the lead after yesterday's matches.
Tied with the two yokozunas at 9-3 were ozekis (champions) Musashimaru and Wakanohana, komusubi (junior champion second class) Akinoshima and lower-ranked Takatoriki and Dejima.
Akebono, or Chad Rowan from Hawaii, set back one of yesterday's co-leaders, ozeki Takanonami, by driving him out with hand thrusts.
Takanohana bulldozed sekiwake (junior champion) Kaio to the ring's edge and then added a decisive shove.
Musashimaru, or Fiamalu Penitani from Hawaii, drove out Minatofuji with hand thrusts.
Wakanohana thrust out Asahiyutaka and Takatoriki drove out Oginishiki.
