Don’t despair: Parking
restrictions are coming

I live near the intersection of Hoomalu Street and Komo Mai Drive in Pearl City. For years, Pearl City drivers have asked the city to eliminate some street parking because a stretch of parked cars hinders the sight of oncoming vehicles at this dangerous intersection.

Finally, after numerous accidents, we were informed last September that the city agreed with our concerns and would be installing "No Parking Here to Corner" signs to improve visibility. To date, the signs have not been installed. Accidents are still occurring. Who's responsible for installing the signs? What's happening?

The wheels of government grind slowly, but there is movement.

"We are in the process of completing our legal notice to the public that signs will be installed at that location," said Cheryl Soon, director of the city Department of Transportation Services.

When that's completed, the signs will be erected, she said.

If that doesn't happen in the next few weeks, call back.

I always look forward to the Taste of Honolulu benefit, which usually happens in late June. Last year, early scrip sales began May 1. This year, I have yet to hear anything about it. Is it still on and, if so, where can I purchase scrip?

The sixth annual event to benefit the Easter Seal Society of Hawaii will be held at the Honolulu Civic Center June 26-28.

Admission is $2 for adults, free for children under 12 and senior citizens.

Advance tickets are available: Package A -- $25 worth of scrip for $20, plus tax -- is $20.80, while Package B -- $50 worth of scrip, plus two admission tickets and tax -- is $41.60. Deadline for mailing in orders is June 13. Call 536-1015.

Information and order forms can also be obtained on the Internet, at http://www.easterseals808.com/taste/index/html.

Auwe

I was so disappointed on Mother's Day. My son gave me long-stemmed roses, which he bought from someone on the street. But the flowers were rotten, and that night they all fell off the stems. They must have been over a week old. Please warn other people to beware what they buy. -- Kathy

Mahalo

To a Pearl City police officer in a black Cougar, a local male and Charles Fontanilla for pushing my car to a gas station after it stalled on Kamehameha Highway on April Fool's Day. With the traffic around me jamming, they became true angels in a much desperate situation. -- N. Remigio

A note on the aloha spirit

R. Marrs sent in an auwe that the words "aloha spirit" were empty after someone broke into her car during a recent trip to Hawaii. My partner's from Honolulu and we visit regularly. On April 24, on our most recent trip, our rental car was broken into at Ward Warehouse. The purchases didn't really matter, but the thieves also took an address book, old watch and other items of sentimental or personal value to us. While we share the same sense of hurt as R. Marrs, we feel there's still a lot of aloha spirit out there. It's just that some people understand it and practice better than others. -- Edgar Poma, San Francisco

Punchbowl traffic

Special traffic controls are in effect tomorrow through Monday, Memorial Day, to accommodate visitors to the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific.

Police officers will be at three intersections: Tantalus and Puowaina, Puowaina and Hookui, and Hookui and Auwaiolimu. No left turns will be allowed from Hookui to Auwaiolimu Street.

Within the cemetery, traffic will be made one-way.
