Jazz and canoes. Why not?

The two come together this weekend in four events that make Maui the fun and sun capital of the Memorial Day weekend.

The Maui Music Festival, Saturday and Sunday, offers a weekend of jazz on outdoor stages in Kaanapali.

Ground Zero is a main stage at Kaanapali's north golf course.

Main-stage concerts start at 3 p.m. each afternoon. Saturday's lineup features Michael McDonald, Boney James, Keiko Matsui, Michael Paulo, Gregg Karukas, Kiki Ebsen and Sean Holt. Sunday's concert features Paul Taylor, Jean-Luc Ponty, the Smooth Jazz All Stars, and Bela Fleck and the Flecktones.

Satellite stages at Kaanapali Beach Resort and at the Marriott and Sheraton hotels will offer local entertainment before and after each main-stage concert.

Ticket prices begin at $25, with air, lodging, car and ticket packages available. Call (800) 922-1515. For other concert information call (808) 667-2628 on Maui.

Also happening on Maui are these water-borne events:

Bullet In Celebration of Canoes: 6-10 p.m. tomorrow on Front Street. The street will be lined with canoe displays, Hawaiian arts and crafts, food booths, flower displays and Hawaiian entertainment.

Bullet Ben Abiera Memorial Canoe Regatta: 8 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, on the beach fronting Whalers Village.

Bullet Eyecatcher Ho'omana'o Challenge Outrigger Sailing Canoe Race": 8 a.m. Sunday, beginning at Kaanapali's Dig Me Beach. A blessing at 7 a.m. will wish paddlers a safe 75-mile race to Waikiki.
