Brothers, Sons and friends gather

The Cruz Brothers -- John, Ernie and Guy -- will join the Makaha Sons -- Moon, John and Jerome -- for Makaha Bash '98, taking place 6 to 9:30 p.m. Saturday at the Waikiki Shell.

Also on the bill will be Robi Kahakalau, Pure Heart and Sean Na'auao and the Poi Pounders. Na'auao won a Hoku Award Sunday for best island contemporary album, "Fish & Poi."

There will also be hula performances, including Sonny Ching's Halau Na Mamo O Pu'uanahulu.

Tickets are $25.50, $21.50 and $16 advance, available at the Blaisdell box office and through the Connection. Ticket prices the day of the show will be $27.50, $23.50 and $17.

Bomba da bomb

Los Pleneros de la 21, nine musicians and dancers who celebrate the Puerto Rican bomba and plena music traditions, will perform at 8 p.m. June 5 at Leeward Community College Theatre, and 6:30 p.m. June 6 at the Maui Country Club.

"Plena," or "el periodico cantato" (the singing newspaper), was so named because it reports about the history of the Puerto Rican people. "Bomba" refers to a barrel-shaped drum.

Tickets for the Leeward performance are $15 general and $10 for seniors and students, and will be available beginning Tuesday at Harry's Music Store, the University of Hawaii at Manoa Campus Center ticket desk, Mercado de la Raza (1315 S. Beretania St. and in Wahiawa), the Hispanic Center of Hawaii (2044 S. Beretania St.) and the United Puerto Rican Association (1249 N. School St.)

Baby expo expected

The New Baby Expo 1998 debust May 30 and 31 at the Blaisdell Center, featuring information and resources on parenting and child care, education, baby products and services geared toward expectant parents and parents with children up to age 5.

There will be wide, stroller-friendly aisles, a main stage for entertainment, a children's activity area and an amenity suite offering mothers a convenient, private rest area.

Show times are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. May 30 and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. May 31. General admision is $2.50, with children under 5 admitted free.
