What ever happened to the Dole pineapple water tank? Pineapple water
tank had to goThe landmark Dole pineapple water tank was built in 1923 and torn down in 1993 because the steel structure had become so corroded it was in danger of collapsing.
Most of the 60-ton, 62-foot-long pineapple was not salvageable and has been taken away.
"The crown may be some place. But most of the pieces were so corroded they weren't salvageable," said Lucien Wong, president of Castle and Cooke Properties Inc.'s commercial division. "If they were in terrible shape then, they're in worse shape now."
Castle and Cooke now manages the Dole Cannery shopping complex after the original developer, Horizon Group Inc., pulled out of the venture.
Wong said Castle and Cooke would like to rebuild the water tower, but it could cost up to $1 million to do so.
"If you know somewhere I can get a million dollars, if we can figure out a way to do that so it can pay for itself," Wong said.
