The young hula dancers of Iolani School took top honors in the 1998 Hawai'i Secondary Schools Hula Kahiko Competition. Iolani wins school
hula competitionIolani, led by kumu hula Ed Collier, won the overall trophies for the intermediate and high school divisions, as well as top honors for kane and huuia, or co-ed, dancing.
The Hula Kahiko Competition was held May 9 at King Intermediate School. The annual event allows school-age dancers to compete through their schools rather than formal hula studios. It allows many young people who cannot afford to join halau to experience hula judging and competition.
Many of the private schools are led by professional kumu hula, but most of the public schools learn from volunteer instructors.
The only public schools to place were Kailua and Waimea high schools and Lahaina Intermediate.
