A classical
Kauai weekendNOT that anyone should need an excuse to visit the Princeville Resort on Kauai, but if you or a loved one are fans of classical music, they've got just the weekend for you. Artistic director Norman Krieger has lined up an impressive list of musical artists to participate in the Prince Albert Music Festival May 28-31. (Prince Albert was the only child of King Kamehameha IV and Queen Emma, and the namesake of Princeville Resort.) Some of the top artists who'll be appearing in the grand ballroom that weekend will be international violin soloists Anne Akiko Meyers, Kurt Nikkanen and Elmar Oliveira, violists Peter Hans Keuning and Michelle Sidener, pianists Jamie Parker and Lawrence Ross, cellist Mike Mermagen, Juilliard School's Shostakovich Cello Award-winner Daniel Gaisford and flautist Claire Scandrett. And what a beautiful locale for such beautiful music ...
HERE'S one time where a cellular phone wasn't obtrusive: Honor graduate Jim Concannon was standing in the front row as a student marshal in the University of Hawaii commencement ceremony Sunday when a cellular phone was passed to him. Seems his mother-in-law, Carmen Haugen, was so proud of her daughter Cathy's husband getting a 4.0 grade point average, netting him the marshal's job at commencement, that she wanted his parents in Boston to share in his excitement. So she got them on her cell phone and had it passed up to Jim on the floor so they could offer their congratulations ...
Copperfield of 'Dreams'
WOW! That was the reaction of just about everyone who saw the first Sprint preview of illusionist David Copperfield's "Dreams and Nightmares" at the Blaisdell Concert Hall. The long distance carrier invited 200 of its VIP customers to attend the show and a pre-performance party at the Honolulu Club. People from Hawaiian Electric's Bob Clarke to Sheraton topper John Brogan were all smiles after the show, particularly when David joined them on the Ward Avenue lanai for a champagne toast. "Dreams and Nightmares" pretty much sums up my image of his fiancee, Claudia Schiffer, first alone and then with him. His grand opening show is tonight ...CONGRATS are due to Gary Sprinkle, whose "Pacific Adventures" eco-adventure show on KITV won two regional Emmys from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. The shows that copped Emmys were the one on Palau and the other on Sri Lanka, photography by Rex Von Arnswaldt and Rick Pike respectively ...
THE HawaiiDiet, as devised by Dr. Terry Shintani, is available to the public and UH students, and beginning June 13 will be featured at the Honolulu Community College Cafeteria as well. Hawaii to Napa via London
WHEN genial Irishman Seamus McManus resigned as G.M. of the Kahala Mandarin, he moved to England to become managing director of the prestigious Claridge's. He'd scarcely learned his way around than the company was sold. Fortunately for the many friends he made in Hawaii, Seamus was able to relocate to Napa Valley and is now managing director of Meadowood, a lovely little resort in the wine country. When he moved to London, McManus left his family behind until the kids finished school this spring, so they'll now be able to make the shorter move directly to Napa ...
