Mid-Pac top baseball seed

Mid-Pacific, the ILH champion, is the top seed for the Hawaii High School Athletic Association state baseball tournament that begins Wednesday at Aloha Stadium.

The Owls, No. 2 Maui, third seed Waianae and No. 4 Waiakea all have first-round byes into Thursday's second round.

In Wednesday's openers, Baldwin meets Roosevelt at 11:30 a.m. and Kalani and Kauai battle at 2 p.m. At 4:30 p.m., Hilo takes on Mililani with defending state champion Iolani playing Aiea at 7 p.m.

Daily admission is $5 for students and $6 for adults.

WILLIAMS, HO LOSE: At Ikumi Beach, Japan, Hawaii's Ross Williams and Derek Ho were eliminated in the fourth round of the Tokushima Pro surf meet yesterday. Australian Daniel Wills won the men's title and Layne Beachley took the women's crown.

FUND-RAISER SUCCESS: Last Wednesday's Coaches Versus Cancer Fund-Raiser at Murphy's Bar & Grill raised over $10,000, an amount that is expected to put University of Hawaii basketball coaches Riley Wallace and Vince Goo into the Top 5 in the national competition.

Over 150 college coaches are involved in events to raise money to battle cancer. The Rainbows and Wahine programs also raised funds with fan pledges for 3-points shots made during the season; the Rainbows hit 147 and the Wahine 122.
