Mid-Pacific came off two straight losses in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu baseball tournament to defeat Iolani, 8-3, and win the overall league title last night at Aloha Stadium.

Justin Khan homered in the third and Brian Lee homered in the fourth to lead the Owls (14-5), who will get the higher of two ILH berths in next week's Hawaii High School Athletic Association tournament.

The state tournament begins Wednesday at Aloha Stadium.

Iolani (14-5-1), the two-time defending state champion, gets the other berth.

The Raiders were led by Scott Tajima, who went 2-for-4 and homered.

Brandon Fujimoto started for Mid-Pacific and Brian Lee relieved in the fifth.

Maryknoll earns state
tourney berth

Nabosa Basse scored four of her 13 points in overtime as the Maryknoll Spartans earned the Interscholastic League of Honolulu's second spot in the HHSAA basketball tournament with a 30-28 win over Kamehameha last night at McCabe Gym.

Drae Self scored all 11 of the Warriors' points in the first half and had eight in the fourth quarter, when Kamehameha tied the game at the end of regulation at 25-all.

ILH regular-season champion Punahou has the league's other spot in the state tournament.

The girls' state basketball tournament starts Tuesday.

Top seeds Oda and Hoe
advance in state tennis

Top seeds Malino Oda of Lahaina and Erin Hoe of Mililani advanced through the first two rounds of the Fila/HHSAA State Tennis Championships yesterday at the Kiahuna & Poipu Kai Resorts on Kauai.

Oda beat Waianae's Eddie Acuna, 6-1, 6-2, in the second rounmd after a first-round bye in the boys; draw.

Hoe beat Erin Hiranaga of University High, 6-0, 6-0, in the second round after a first-round bye in the girls' draw.

Boys' No. 2 seed Mike Mackinnon and girls No. 2 seed Stacy Hakikawa of Leilehua also advanced.

In boys doubles play, Punahou's Mike Bruggerman and Bucky Jencks reached the third round with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Bryant Hamai and Randall Wong of Maui.

In the girls doubles, Jafra Depontes and Kodee Domingo of Kamehameha reached the third round with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Desiree Wakuta and Maki Lowe of Kapaa.

Punahou led both the boys and girls team standings after the first day of play. The Punahou boys had seven points; Konawaena was second with 3. The Punahou girls had 6 points, followed by Iolani, Kamehameha and Mililani with 4.
