bullet "Makana Akamai": Friends of the Library is asking for book donations to help the library's book budget. A brochure of wanted books is available at 536-4174. The books listed in the brochure are selected by the library staff to expand the library's collection and provide requested materials. Books may be donated to a favorite library.

Contests

bullet Children's stories: Children's Literature Hawaii is looking for writers 16 and older to enter their contest and win $75-$150. Entries must be no longer than 10 pages and must be aimed toward children ages infant through young adult. Stories can be fiction or non-fiction and retold legends are acceptable. Judging will be based on appeal, originality, completeness, plausibility and style.

Manuscripts must be clearly typed (approximately 250 words per page) and double-spaced on white paper. No illustrations. Name, title, address and phone number must be typed on a separate cover sheet. Entries must be unpublished and no entries will be returned. Entry fee: $5 per story. Make checks payable to Children's Literature Hawaii and mail to: CLH Story Contest Coordinator, Department of English, 1733 Donaghho Road, Honolulu, Hawaii 96822.

Winners will meet columnist Gwynne Spencer, June 13; and awarded at a conference, June 11. Deadline: Wednesday. Information, 956-7559.
