Punahou hosts
ILH water polo

Regular-season champion Punahou, led by Noel Pacarro and Maureen Flanagan, plays Pac-5 at 5:30 p.m. and Iolani meets Kamehameha at 6:45 p.m. in tomorrow's semifinals of the Interscholastic League of Honolulu postseason girls' water polo tournament at Punahou's Waterhouse Pool.

The winners tangle Saturday at 4:15 p.m. after a third-place match at 3 p.m.

If a team other than Punahou wins the tourney title, there will be a championship playoff next week.

BALLARD, DORIAN ADVANCE: Rochelle Ballard of Hawaii advanced to the women's quarterfinals of the Association of Surfing Professionals' Tokushima Pro meet yesterday at Ikumi Beach, Japan.

Hawaii's Shane Dorian made it through Round 2 of the men's competition.

UH'S HO, HONMA AT KUAKINI: The Kuakini Health System will hold an open house tomorrow with University of Hawaii baseball Rainbows Randon Ho and Neal Honma as special guests to greet the public.

The hours are 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the facility, 347 N. Kuakini St.

IKEDA TOP ATHLETE AT PARK COLLEGE: Janel Ikeda of Honolulu, an all-conference player in volleyball, basketball and softball in each of her four seasons at Park College, was named the Parkville, Mo., school's first-ever female Athlete of the Year recently.

HIRONAKA, CARAHASEN STANDOUT: Junior Carrie Hironaka, a Punahou graduate from Honolulu, won a share of the award for multi-sport athletes with good grades and potential for leadership at Tufts University's annual Captains Luncheon two weeks ago in Medford, Mass. She competes on the basketball and softball teams.

Senior Lianne Carahasen of Aiea and Maryknoll School, a hurdler and sprinter on the Tufts women's track and field team, captured the W. Murray Kenney Award for commitment and persistence.

RACE STILL OPEN: Late applications for Sunday's Holokiki O' Alele half-marathon, 5-kilometer and all-children's races will be accepted through Saturday's pick-up time.

The events begin and end at Enchanted Lake Elementary School. The half-marathon starts at 6 a.m. and the 5K at 6:30 a.m. The 400-yard and 100-yard races for children start at 7:15 and 7:30 a.m., respectively.

Late fees are $23 for the half-ma-rathon, $17 for the 5K and $13 for the children's races.

KALANI, CHRISTY MAHI TO ILLINOIS STATE: Kalani Mahi, a 1981 graduate of Kamehameha Schools, and his wife Christy have joined the Illinois State women's volleyball staff as assistant coaches.

Kalani Mahi has been the head coach at Bradley for the past eight seasons. His wife has been his assistant. Illinois State's head coach is Punahou product Julie Morgan.

UH VOLLEYBALL CAMPS: The University of Hawaii men's volleyball team will conduct several camps for adults and youth this summer.

The camps for adults are scheduled for June 1-5, July 6-10 and July 13-17. The youth camps are scheduled for July 7-11, July 15-18 and July 27-30.
