Takanohana co-leader

Grand champion Takanohana weathered a number of throw attempts by winless Kotonowaka before edging out the third-ranked maegashira over the edge the ring for a share of the early unbeaten lead in the Summer Grand Sumo Tournament today at Tokyo with rank-and-file wrestlers Kyokushuzan and Takatoriki.

Yokozuna Akebono, or Chad Rowan from Hawaii, evened his record at 2-2 as he survived Tosanoumi's belt throw attempt and slammed the No. 2 maegashira down to his third defeat.

Musashimaru, or Fiamalu Penitani from Hawaii, wasted no time in shoving out winless No. 1 maegashira Aogiyama to collect his third straight win.
