Five UH Wahine selected
to All-WAC softball team

The University of Hawaii has placed a league-high five softball players -- including catcher Dana Degen for the second year in a row -- on the All-Western Athletic Conference first team.

The other first-team UH picks announced yesterday were first baseman Joyce Lum, shortstop Kehau Cofran, third baseman Melissa McGie and outfielder Tia Morenz. Pitcher Kelly Gentle of the Wahine was named to the second team.

WAC champion Fresno State swept the top honors. Nina Lindenberg was named Player of the Year, Amanda Scott Pitcher of the Year, Becky Witt Freshman of the Year and Margie Wright Coach of the Year.

FOUR HAWAII SURFERS ADVANCE: Shawn Sutton, Kalani Robb, Sunny Garcia and Andy Irons of Hawaii won their opening heats yesterday and advanced to the third round of the Association of Surfing Professionals' Tokushima Pro meet at Ikumi Beach, Japan.

Competing again today after second- or third-place finishes yesterday were Derek Ho, Shane Dorian, Ross Williams, Kaipo Jaquias and John Shimooka of Hawaii.

Rochelle Ballard of Hawaii finished second in her first-round women's heat and was to surf again today.

Hawaii's Megan Abubo was eliminated after a third-place finish.

UH WAHINE SOCCER: Any female soccer player who is a full-time student at the University of Hawaii next semester and is interested in trying out for the Wahine, should call the coaches office at 956-4525 by July 1.
