


Big Island professional Kevin Hayashi shot a 1-under-par 71 in yesterday's U.S. Open Local Qualifying Tournament at the Waialae Country Club to become the only Hawaii golfer to advance to a sectional qualifying tournament on June 8 in Orlando, Fla. Hayashi in U.S. Open

Alternates from Hawaii will be Stan Souza, Chuck Davis and Jerry Mullen, who shot 74, 75 and 77, respectively, yesterday.
COACHES VERSUS CANCER: Rounds of golf with University of Hawaii basketball coaches Riley Wallace and Vince Goo, one-on-one basketball games with members of the Fabulous Five and autographed basketballs from the Wahine and Rainbows men's basketball teams are just some of the items available at the silent action portion of tomorrow's Coaches Versus Cancer fund-raiser at Murphy's Bar & Grill.
The event is being held in conjunction with the national campaign involving 150 other coaches to raise funds to battle cancer. Players from both the men's and women's teams will be in attendance, as will sportscaster Jim Leahey, who is recovering from a bout with leukemia.
Tickets are $25 and include a heavy pupu buffet and beverages. Tickets are available at Murphy's (531-0422) or the American Cancer Society (595-7544).
The function runs from 5:30-9 p.m.
All proceeds go to American Cancer Society.
UMEMURA TO DEFEND GOLF TITLE: Anna Umemura, who just completed her freshman year at the University of Tennessee, will be home to defend her title in the Jennie K. Invitational this weekend at the Mid-Pacific Country Club.
Umemura won last year's 54-hole event by 13 strokes in scoring a triple crown in local women's golf. She also won the Hawaii State women's match play and stroke play titles.
Also entered is 1996 champion Kathy Cho, a Punahou School junior who did not compete last year because of a scheduling conflict.
The tournament will start Friday and end Sunday.
