Star-BulletinThe wife of a Kalihi Valley man, who was arrested yesterday for allegedly injuring their 3-month-old twin sons, today defended her husband, referring to him as a "loving father."
"He loves the children," said Cleofe Siuze. "He's a good man and a good father."
Ramon Siuze, 41, was arrested on two counts of second-degree assault after admitting to shaking his babies, Carlo and Raffy, while they were in his care. He was expected to be charged today.
The mother took Carlo to Kapiolani Hospital on Thursday because he was acting "fussy," according to police reports. The infant also had a rash on his face when she returned from work, she said today. Baby Carlo was found to have a fever, cough and fractured legs, the police reports said.
The mother then took Raffy to be examined because he had the same cough. He was found to have a broken arm and legs, police reports said, and a pediatrician believed the injuries were caused from being shaken.
Cleofe Siuze said the incident was "not intentional" and that her husband has been experiencing tremendous stress from severe kidney problems, the babies crying and family problems back in their native Philippines, which may have contributed to the alleged assault.
"If you were a father, could you break your own baby's arm?" she asked.
"He's a good man, he cannot do that. Maybe he just held on too tight."
The couple's neighbor, Sandy Maioho, echoed the woman's views about her husband.
"He's good with the babies," she said. "It was just he was under so much stress."
According to Honolulu Detective Jerry Trinidad, Ramon Siuze had no prior arrests or cases.
Cleofe Siuze said her husband has called her from jail to ask of the condition of the children, who remain at Kapiolani Hospital. "He's so sorry about the kids," she said.
State Child Protective Services took the couple's 18-month-old son Venson Anthony Siuze into custody on Saturday, but returned him this morning.
Cleofe Siuze is upset that she's not only lost the babies for now, but also her husband.
She worries that officials will keep them apart, and she desperately wants to become a family again.
"I'm very, very sad," she said softly. "They'll die without my husband -- they need a father."
CPS officials were not immediately available for comment this morning.
