


LOS ANGELES--The University of Hawaii women's water polo team finished in fourth place at the National Collegiate Championships yesterday, losing to Stanford, 10-4. Wahine fourth in
water polo nationalsTop-seeded UCLA took the national title with a 7-3 win over California.
Hawaii's Marie-Luc Arpin was named to the National Collegiate Championships All-Tournament Team.
ARAKAKIS HONORED: Henry and Beulah Arakaki, parents of former University of Hawaii swimmer Dan Arakaki and volunteers for the swimming program for 20 years, have been named recipients of the 1998 Charles Ushijima Rainbow Service Award.
Henry Arakaki has been a volunteer director for UH swim meets since 1978 and Beulah has been in charge of hospitality for all home meets.
UH-HILO ATHLETES OF THE YEAR: Tennis player Carsten Eisenbarth and softball player Kristy Odamura were named the University of Hawaii at Hilo's Athletes of the Year.
Eisenbarth, a junior from Hasselvoth, Germany, was ranked 13th in NCAA Division II singles and also was the Vulcans' Male Scholar/Athlete of the Year.
Odamura led the Vulcans softball team in batting (.422) and set single-season records in at-bats (166), runs (51), hits (70) and walks (25).
SILVERSWORDS SIGN FOUR: Monique Mata and Jess Matsuda of Mililani High, Kauanoe Kaneshiro of Konawaena, and Jade Robles of Kalani have signed letters of intent to run cross country for Chaminade University this fall.
HURRICANES LOSE HOME OPENER: Brian Mader kicked a two-point field goal as time expired to lift the Green Bay Bombers to a 46-45 Professional Indoor Football League victory over the Honolulu Hurricanes Saturday night in the Hurricanes home opener.
Honolulu (1-2) rallied from a 41-28 fourth-quarter deficit and took a 45-44 lead with just over a minute to play when Sheldon Coen caught a touchdown pass from Mike Tillis. Green Bay improved to 3-0.
SCHWITTERS NO KA OI: Jim Schwitters, who recently completed his 33rd season coaching the University of Hawaii men's tennis team and has coached the UH women's team for 25 years, is the winningest college coach in the sport with an overall record of 1,218-532-15.
The UH men were 12-14-1 this season and the Wahine were 16-11. Each team was 0-2 in the Western Athletic Conference championships.
KAYAK-CANOE CHANNEL RACE: The Starbucks Molokai Challenge from the Friendly Island to Oahu will cap the Kanaka Ikaika kayak- and solo canoe-racing season Sunday.
The 32-mile open-ocean race starts at 8:30 a.m. for canoes and 9 a.m. for kayaks at the Kaluakoi Hotel and ends at Koko Marina in Hawaii Kai.
