2 shot by police will be
checked for use of drugs

By Rod Ohira, Star-Bulletin

Police plan to subpoena hospital blood tests for two men shot by police in separate incidents last week to determine if the men were under the influence of drugs.

Detective Gary Winterbottom expects to have results by midweek.

Crystal methamphetamine was found in a car driven by Mark Harriman, who was shot Thursday in Kapahulu, police said. They also said marijuana and crystal meth were discovered in Fortunato "Junior" Barques III's sports utility vehicle.

Barques was shot twice in the back by a patrol officer at a Pupukea heiau Tuesday.

Harriman was released from Queen's Hospital Saturday and arrested on a parole retake warrant. He is being held at the Oahu Community Correctional Center.

Winterbottom said attempted murder, criminal property damage and auto theft charges are pending against Harriman. Barques is in critical condition in Queen's Hospital.

Police are also investigating Barques for an assault earlier this year involving his girlfriend, who was with him at the heiau Tuesday. The critically injured woman was dropped off at Kahuku Hospital on Feb. 15, police said. She refused to cooperate with police at the time.
