Kauai High's Jaime Matsumura, last year's state runner-up, led after the first round of the Hawaii High School Athletic Association golf championships on Maui.

Matsumura led five golfers in the 60s on a still day at the Kaanapali South Course. He shot 32 -33 65.

Melanie Matsumura of Waiakea took a one-stroke lead among the girls with a 36-38 74. Merynn Ito was in second at 75 and Punahou's Kathy Cho was at 76.

Punahou's Jim Seki, a junior who won the Interscholastic League of Honolulu and Navy-Marine Invitational golf titles in the past two weeks, was two strokes behind Jaime Mastumura on the boys' leader board.

Seki, starting on the back nine, shot 35-32.

Two Waiakea golfers were next. Landon Chang was at 67 and Chris Igawa checked in at 69.

Ian Hunt of Kauai rounded out the top five at 69.

Waiakea led the team competition with a 279, two strokes ahead of Kauai. Next was Kamehameha at 295, Maui at 298, and Punahou at 300.

"We're not conceding anything but we're pretty far back," said Robert Icban, coach of the three-time defending team champion Punahou.

The Buffanblu miss 1996 boys' champion Parker McLachlin, who was third in 1997, and three-time girls' champion Anna Umemura. Both graduated last year.

"Waiakea was runner-up to us last year and they've been close the last few years, so they may be ready to break through," said Icban. "Kauai has a great junior golf program."

Waiakea last won the state golf title in 1992. The school has six titles since 1983.

Kauai last won the state title in 1989.

Icban said he thinks Seki's chances of winning are better if the conditions are not as good today as they were yesterday.

"I'd like the conditions to be a little tougher because the better players come to the top on a bad day," he said. "Almost half the field broke 80 in the first round, so the conditions were a little too easy."

Icban said Seki wasn't happy with his putting.

"He made the turn at 3 under and shooting 67 is nothing to sneeze at. but he wasn't satisfied. He felt he should've gotten more out of his rounds."
