Chapleski wins
at Kapalua

Ko Olina's Mark Chapleski shot a 2-under-par 71 for a 36-hole total of 145 to win the GTE Hawaiian Tel Hall of Fame golf championship yesterday at the Kapalua Plantation Course. The victory was worth $2,500.

Kapalua pro Ben Hongo finished at 147 and was the only other golfer to better par .

Masa Kaya successfully defended his senior division title with a 153, two strokes better than Ron Castillo Sr.

PARIS CUT: Former University of Hawaii center Kendis Leeburg Paris was released on the fourth and final cut by the Detroit Shock, an expansion team in the Women's National Basketball Association.

Paris went to the Shock's free agent camp this past weekend.

"There were 400 girls there and it was very competitive," she said. "They cut after each session. I had a great time and met my goal of going there and giving it everything I had."

BYUH WOMEN SHARE TOP SPOT: The Brigham Young-Hawaii women's tennis team, led by defending NAIA singles champion Karin Ptaszek and the top-rated doubles tandem of Paiao Short and Helena Nordwall, is tied for the No. 1 spot with Auburn-Montgomery in the latest NAIA poll.

On the men's side, Hawaii Pacific University is No. 5 nationally and BYUH is sixth. HPU has the third-ranked singles player in sophomore Eric Sandblom while Toshi Matsui and Wei-Yu Su of BYUH are No. 1 in doubles.

VULCANS IN 'SWEET SIXTEEN': The University of Hawaii at Hilo men's tennis team will face undefeated No. 1 seed Lander (S.C.) University in Friday's opening round of the NCAA Division II National Championship in Bolivar, Mo.

The Vulcans (13-10) qualified for the nationals by winning the West Regional last weekend at Pomona, Calif., with 5-4 nods over Cal Poly-Pomona and UC Davis.

WRESTLING HONORS: Edwin Acopan of McKinley was selected Wrestler of the Year, McKinley's Chris Johnson Coach of the Year and Kalaheo's William Sullivan Assistant Coach of the Year in Hawaii by National Wrestling Coaches Association Region 8 voters.

Johnson also was named the Region 8 Assistant Coach of the Year.

PARISH WEST POINT-BOUND : Melissa Parish, a three-time OIA All-Star center fielder for the Moanalua High softball team, will attend the United States Military Academy at West Point, N.Y., it was announced yesterday by Tony Freitas, Hawaii scouting director for College Prospects of America.

Parish, No. 1 in her senior class, also is the ROTC Group Commander at Moanalua.
