UCLA facing tough opponent in Pepperdine
The first clue that Al States was serious about winning the NCAA men's volleyball title Saturday night? The UCLA coach didn't bring his golf clubs on this, his third trip to Hawaii in five months. And, instead of teeing off with some of his fellow coaches Friday morning at Olomana Golf Links, Scates was up at 6 a.m., thinking about which player to use tonight that would avoid the big water hazard called the Pepperdine Waves.
Finishing on top of the leader board for the 17th time in 29 years is not going to be an easy chip-in for Scates. His Bruins survived a difficult par-5-game, 3-hour match with Lewis in Thursday's semifinal and now face a team that beat them on their home court a week ago.
"We've had three different game plans for them," said Scates, who went 2-1 against Pepperdine this season. "We were lucky it worked the first time when it went five at their place. It worked on April 10, but it didn't work a week ago.
