Summer Stuffs

Industrious keiki are probably looking forward to summer school, right?

Right. Well ... maybe not. But how are you going to fill those long summer days?

Here are some suggestions:

bullet Boys & Girls Club: The Honolulu unit will have sports, games, crafts, dancing, cooking, reading and math clinics, judo, camping and field trips for children ages 7 to 17, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday, June 9 to Aug. 14, Washington Intermediate School grounds. Cost: $10 per year. Call John, 949-4743.

bullet Diamond Head Theatre: "Musical Theatre Experience" program for children ages 7-16, 8 a.m.-noon June 15-Aug. 7. Children will learn playwriting, stagecraft, history of film and TV, dancing, acting and singing. Classes will be separated by ages: 7-11 and 12-16. Student showcase, Aug. 8. Cost: $550. Full payment required before classes begin. bullet Epiphany School: Peace Camp for children entering grades 3-7 in the fall, 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m. June 15-19. Children will learn how to relate with others, mediation skills, anger management, conflict resolution, appreciation of cultures, peace and justice, and respect for the environment. There also will be field trips, art projects, games, stories, music and drama. Cost: $150 (few scholarships available). Register at 737-4114.

bullet Honolulu Academy of Arts: Art Center's summer school offers a selection of four programs, June 16 through July 23. "Exploring Two and Three Dimensional Art" for children kindergarten through fourth grade; "Drawing and Painting" for children in grades 5-12; "Ceramics" for children in grades 4-6; and "Parent-Child Classes" for children ages 3-5 accompanied by a parent or grandparent. Classes meet Tuesdays-Fridays. Cost: $75-$160. Applications available at the Academy Art Center at Linekona or call 532-8741.

bullet Montessori Community School: "Two-Year-Old Program" for children ages 2 and 3, May 26-Aug. 20. Class times and tuition rates: 7:30 a.m.-noon, Liholiho campus ($1,536); 7:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m., Nehoa campus ($2,112); and 7:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m., both campuses ($1,755). Children in diapers accepted.

"Nature Explorers" program for children ages 3 to 5, will be held May 26-Aug. 20. Children will learn about the weather, plants and animal life. Times and tuition rates: 7:30 a.m.-noon, Liholiho campus ($1,170); 7:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m., Nehoa campus ($1,632); and 7:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m., both campuses ($1,323).

Children entering first grade through sixth grade can participate in the "Summer Discover-ies" program, June 9-Aug. 20. Classes will be held 7:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. ($1,380) or 7:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m. ($1,660). Intersession programs also available. Days and tuition rates (higher rate is for the all-day session): June 9-19, $236 or $285; June 22-July 2, $262 or $320; July 6-17, $290 or $350; July 20-31, $290 or $350; and Aug. 3-20, $405 or $485.

Students in the first to third grades will learn about the solar system, weather, ecology, cooking, gardening, crafts and fitness. Fourth through sixth graders will learn about literature, geometry, computers, peace and justice, fitness and more.

bullet Waikiki Aquarium: "Summer Ocean Studies Program" for students currently enrolled in grades 9-11, 8:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays; and 8:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. Wednesdays. Classes will be held at the UH-Manoa and Waikiki Aquarium with some fieldtrips extending outside of class times and on weekends. Students will have classroom and laboratory sessions on marine science, and ocean safety and conservation. Limited enrollment. Students can earn science credits toward graduation. Tuition: $400-$650. Partial scholarships available. Applications due May 15.
