UH SPLITS: At Fort Collins, Colo., Kelly Gentle shut out Colorado State on four hits as the University of Hawaii softball team won the first game of a Western Athletic Conference doubleheader yesterday.
Regina Kaaihili had three hits, including a homer, and drove in three runs in the win.
UH (37-13, 14-9 in the WAC), lost the second game, 4-3.
AU 13 BACK: At Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif., former Hawaii prep golfer Elisha Au finished 13 strokes off the pace at the women's Pac-10 Championships. Au, playing for the University of Washington, shot a 12-over-par 228.
RAINBOWS 13th: At Provo, Utah, the University of Hawaii men's golf team took 13th place in the Franklin Quest Cougar Classic with a score of 894. Brigham Young University won the event with a 6-under 858.
Hawaii's top individual was Jarrod Mizusawa, who finished with a 219 to tie for 22nd.
WAHINE 11TH: At Monterey, Calif., the University of Hawaii women's golf team finished in 11th and last place at the Western Athletic Conference championships yesterday. UH had a team score of 166-over-par 1,030. Texas Christian won with a 60-over 924.
Hawaii's top performers were Melissa Shintani, with an 88--253 for 34th place, and Linda Appleblad, at 88--255, tied for 36th. Niina Laitinen of Tulsa took medalist honors with a 7-over 223.
HAWAII LOSES: At Tulsa, Okla., the 13-seeded University of Hawaii men's tennis team was knocked into the consolation bracket at the Western Athletic Conference championships with an opening-round, 4-0 loss to No. 4 Nevada-Las Vegas yesterday.
