Symphonic variations

A dose of the Doc

The maestro of coats and notes, Doc Severinsen, swings back to Hawaii this weekend for concerts with the Honolulu Symphony, 7:30 p.m. tomorrow and Saturday at the Blaisdell Concert Hall.

Joining Doc are former "Tonight Show" musicians Ed Shaughnessy on drums, and Snooky Young and Conte Condoll on trumpets.

Hailed as a virtuoso trumpeter and best known to television audiences for his "Tonight Show" stint with Johnny Carson, Severinsen, who performed here last year, concludes the symphony's pops season with "Dancin' with Doc to the Big Bands."

Severinsen and company will perform big band favorites like "Strike Up the Band," "Sentimental Journey" and "Chattanooga Choo-Choo."

More Beethoven

Guest conductor and violinist Joseph Silverstein will perform with the Honolulu Symphony, 7:30 p.m. Sunday and Tuesday at the Blaisdell Concert Hall.

He will play the Violin Concerto in D Major, Op. 61 and conduct Symphony No. 6 in F Major, Op. 68, "Pastorale."

The two works for this second concert of the Beethoven series are from Beethoven's "Middle Period," acclaimed as the composer's most prolific.

The Violin Concerto is the only one Beethoven composed.

For tickets

Tickets are $15, $22, $27.50, $35 and $47.50 and available at the Honolulu Symphony Box Office (538-8863) or Connection ticket outlets.
