Arpin named to all-MPSF
water polo team

Hawaii's Marie-Luc Arpin was named to the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation's All-Federation women's water polo team.

Teammates Lila Fraser, Denise Parreira, Karen Umemura and Vanesa Wasik were honorable mention selections.

BYUH AWARDS: Chris Bates of the Brigham Young University-Hawaii basketball team was named the 1998 Men's Seasiders Athlete of the Year and Ana Alves of the volleyball team was the women's winner.

Bates, a senior, led the team in steals, was an honorable mention NAIA All-American and an NAIA academic All-American.

Alves also was an NAIA All-American and NAIA academic All-American, who was a co-captain of the Sea Warriors unbeaten national championship team.

WAHINE SAILORS FOURTH: The University of Hawaii women's sailing team placed fourth at the Women's Pacific Coast Championships. Hawaii is ranked No. 14 nationally by Sailing World.

TENNIS CHAMPS: Erin Hoe of Mililani won the girls' singles and Eddie Acuna of Waianae the boys' singles at the OIA West Post Season Tennis Classic yesterday.

Hoe, the top seed, beat No. 2 Stacy Hakikawa of Leilehua, 7-5, 6-0. Acuna, seeded No. 2, beat top-seeded Brian Lee of Leilehua, 6-2, 2-6, 6-2.

The top-seeded girls' doubles team, Kristy Oshita and Geri Miyashiro of Mililani, beat No. 2 seed Emily Aguilar and Edna Gomez of Pearl City, 6-4, 6-2. Top seeded Emilio Aguilar and Lance Tanouye of Pearl City won the boys' doubles title over surprising No. 6 seed Peter Choy and Calvin Hee of Moanalua.

WAHINE GOLFERS 10TH: At Pebble Beach, Calif., the University of Hawaii women's golf team was in 10th place after shooting a 344 during the first round of the Western Athletic Conference Women's Golf Championships yesterday.

The University of Tulsa, ranked No. 1 in the nation, was in first with a 307.

Hawaii's Linda Appleblad was tied for 25th individually after her 83. Melissa Shintani shot an 84 and was tied for 29th.

VULCANS FIFTH: At Turlock, Calif., the University of Hawaii at Hilo golf team was in fifth place at 626 after two rounds at the NCAA Division II District 8 Regional. Cal State-Stanislaus leads with a 580.

UH-Hilo's Shane Hoshino was tied for 11th with a 152. Shea Miyashiro (tied for 21st) was at 157; Kevin Ginoza (tied for 23rd) at 158; Branden Aoki (tied for 26th) at 159, and John Nakano (tied for 27th) at 160.

GYMNASTS THIRD: At Tempe, Ariz., the Hawaii's All-Star Team placed third at the Region Two Gymnastics Meet last week. The team was comprised of Chris Lee, Quincy Solano, Frederick Reppun, Abraham Robinson and Greg Takeshima.
