Waialua man critically injured in auto wreck

Police say speed and alcohol may have contributed to a crash last night on Kaukonahua Road resulting in critical injuries to a 34-year-old Waialua man, as April continues to be a dangerous month for Oahu motorists.

The man, hospitalized at Queen's, was injured when his Toyota station wagon went off the roadway at about 10:30 p.m. and crashed into an irrigation ditch.

The condition of a second man, 23, has improved from serious to fair. He is also at Queen's Hospital.

Through yesterday, nine crashes this month have killed six people -- five motorists and one pedestrian -- and critically or seriously injured eight others.

The fatalities have occurred on Farrington Highway, near Kahe Point (April 3); Halawa Valley Road (April 6); H-1 freeway, near the Makakilo overpass (April 11) and Waikele offramp (April 13); South King Street (April 14); and Pali Highway, near the entrance to the tunnel (Saturday).

In all, 17 people have been killed on Oahu roadways this year.

Pair uses pepper spray in robbery of cab driver

A woman driving a taxicab was sprayed with pepper spray after being robbed last night on McCully and South King streets by a young man and a woman.

The woman, 59, had stopped for gas after picking up the passengers on Kalakaua Avenue and Ena Road. The couple, who had asked to be taken to Kailua, demanded a refund of their advance fare when she made the stop.

As the driver was returning the money, the male suspect allegedly grabbed her wallet and fled on foot with his companion, police said. The driver was sprayed while chasing the couple.

Both suspects are still at large.

Sexual-assault suspect held for questioning

Police arrested a 22-year-old man at 3 p.m. yesterday on Nanakuli Avenue for questioning about a March 24 sexual assault. The victim, 19, called police after seeing the suspect.

Maui motorcyclist, 25, in guarded condition

WAILUKU -- A motorcyclist injured on Maui yesterday was listed in guarded condition at Queen's Medical Center this morning.

Kurt Miyahira, 25, of Kahului was previously listed in critical condition when he was flown to Honolulu, after the collision on Pulehu Road, about 1.7 miles south of Omaopio Road.

Miyahira was traveling south when he lost control of the motorcycle, was ejected, and collided with a car traveling in the opposite direction at about 9:30 a.m., Police Sgt. Melvin Lorenzo said.

Lorenzo said the cause of the accident is under investigation.

Kailua-Kona woman faces burglary charge

KAILUA-KONA -- A Kailua-Kona woman has been charged with burglary and theft, police said.
