‘Forgotten Five’
recalls old days

Mug shot THIS year's strong UH basketball team made some fans recall another solid team of about 25 years ago called the "Fabulous Five." "But what about the 'Forgotten Five'," sighs Harvey Lee, one of the "Forgotten Five" at UH in '52-53. The forgotten ones and their wives got together for a warm reunion dinner at Harvey and Betsy Lees' recently. They are Willy and Doris Lee, Fred "Mutt" and Pat Furukawa, Al and Grace Malinguis and Tommy and Rose Yasuhara. Each is a UH grad. Willy, Al and Fred became educators and coaches, while Tom and Harvey are retired A.F. officers. Willy is Korean and Harvey looks pure Caucasian but is part-Chinese. Mainland writers thought they were brothers. Actually, the Lees are closer than brothers ...

From Charley's to Chuck's

LES HONG, part-owner and manager of Chuck's Original Steak House in Waikiki has a great collection of taped background music he plays for guests. Some of the favorites by Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett and big bands were on the Charley's Tavern jukebox. Charley's was a bar near UH in the '40s, '50s and '60s. Les' late dad, Ray, was an owner along with Charley and Helen Wong and Asup Hong, Les' uncles and aunty. Ray later opened the House of Hong. The large photo posters, including a terrific swimming shot of Duke Kahanamoku, that were hanging in Charley's are now at Chuck's. Kamaainas will enjoy the memories ...
