Liberty House sets dates
for 3 closures

Liberty House today confirmed plans to close three more stores in the next three weeks, bringing the total to 11 closings since the beginning of this year.

Due to close are resort shops at the Waikiki Sheraton Hotel, Lahaina Center, and Kaluakoi Resort on Molokai. The shops are to close on April 26, 27, and May 16, respectively.

Seven other shops or specialty stores have closed recently, including shops at the Embassy Suites Kaanapali and Westin Maui; Elements at Aloha Tower Marketplace; Home Outlet and The Rack at Maui Marketplace; Home Outlet at Ward Gateway Center; and Liz Claiborne at Pearlridge Center. Already announced was the planned April 30 closing of the Collections store at Kauai Marriott.

A total of 99 employees are affected by the closings, some to be offered positions at other stores, company officials say.

The 11 properties were targeted for closure under the company's bankruptcy reorganization. Liberty House officials say the action will allow the company to concentrate on more profitable locations.

Windows 98 demo crashes on Gates

CHICAGO -- The computer gremlins went after the big enchilada today: Microsoft Corp. Chairman Bill Gates.

Gates, the featured speaker at the opening of the Comdex Spring Computer Show, was demonstrating the new Windows 98 operating system set to debut in June when the system crashed.

"I guess we still have some bugs to work out," he noted ruefully. "That must be why we're not shipping Windows 98 yet."

The system collapsed when a Microsoft employee attempted to plug in a scanner, with his boss standing alongside. Gates was forced to move to another computer to complete his demonstration.

ANA pilots suspend strike after 2 weeks

TOKYO -- The union representing pilots at All Nippon Airways Co. said today it would suspend its selective strike, but warned that flight crews would walk out again if a dispute over wages was not resolved.

"With the approach of the Golden Week holiday season here, we have decided to suspend the selective strike on international flights," the union said in a statement.

The strike, which ANA says has cost it more than 3.8 billion yen ($28.7 million) and is the biggest ever to hit the airline's international service, was to be suspended today, the union said. The ANA pilots' union and other flight staff began targeting selected international flights on April 6, leading to the cancelation of 94 flights.

The strike didn't impact ANA's Nagoya-Oahu service.
