HPU’s Lukic, Tjernstrom
named top student-athletes

Hawaii Pacific University honored cross-country runner Beti Lukic and tennis player Hakan Tjernstrom as the school's Female and Male scholar-athletes of the year at Tuesday's awards banquet at the Sheraton Princess Kaiulani Hotel.

Lukic, a senior from Vasteras, Sweden, has a 3.94 GPA in psychology.

Tjernstrom, a senior from Voxjo, Sweden, has a 3.98 GPA in finance and business economics.

WAHINE HONORED: For the second time in a month, the University of Hawaii swept weekly individual softball honors in the Western Athletic Conference.

Freshman left-hander Desiree Duran was named Pitcher of the Week and junior second baseman Regina Ka'aihili was named Player of the Week. Duran went 2-0 against New Mexico last week while Ka'aihili batted .444 and drove in eight runs.

Hawaii (36-8) moved up from 11th to ninth in yesterday's USA Today Coaches poll. The Wahine begin a WAC road trip Sunday with a doubleheader at San Diego State.

DeRENNE INVITED: Keoni DeRenne of Honolulu has received an invitation to the 1998 USA Baseball National Team summer camp, scheduled to open July 1.

DeRenne, a freshman at the University of Arizona, was a member of the 1996 National Junior Team.

Through April 7, the 5-foot-7, 160-pound shortstop was hitting .353 with 11 doubles, five triples, five homers and 39 RBIs. In the field he had made just nine errors in 197 chances (.954).

RAINBOWS SECOND: Led by skipper Garrett Woodworth and crew member Ursula Austin, who took first place in Division A, the University of Hawaii coed sailing team finished second to Stanford in a 30-team fleet at the recent St. Francis Yacht Club Invitational at San Francisco.

Skipper Jeff Nelson and crew member June Tomizawa gave UH, No. 8 in the most recent Sailing World magazine national rankings, a second-place finish in Division B.

BERG TABBED: Punahou School senior setter Lindsey Berg was named to the Volleyball magazine Fab 50 list of the top seniors in the country.

Berg, who has committed to play at Minnesota next season, is the only Hawaii prep product named.
