Name: Jimmy Hernandez
Age: 14
School: Waimanalo Elementary and Intermediate
Favorite subject: Math
Future: Computer programmer
When Jimmy Hernandez experienced the joy of computers in the sixth grade, it was love at first byte. Captured by computers
Two years later, 14-year-old Hernandez admits his passion for computers is still strong. He spends free time at school computer terminals checking e-mail and surfing the Net, or with a tech group, where he learns about troubleshooting, installing programs and cleaning computers.
Programming computers is his ultimate goal.
"I always dream about doing it as a job," he said.
To reach that dream, Hernandez maintains a 3.8 grade-point average by studying two to three hours after school each day at the local library, and rarely placing pleasure above homework, "unless it's really easy."
Said Hernandez, "I can't settle for a C -- B and above is good for me."
Hard work earned him six school awards last year: three citizenship, one each in English and social studies and an Outstanding Student award.
Counselor Nardine Murai describes Hernandez as an incredibly driven, well-rounded, outstanding, yet quiet, gem.
"Though shy of being in the limelight, Jimmy is most deserving as being one of Waimanalo's finest," she said.
Hernandez said excelling academically is a fun, voluntary activity strongly encouraged by his family. "I just do it because I feel like it," he said.
