Waialua pulls off upset
Star-Bulletin staffWaialua hasn't had many big baseball victories to celebrate over the years. So yesterday's 4-2 upset of defending Oahu Interscholastic Association champion Mililani ranks right up there.
Pitching at Waialua Recreation Center Field, junior right-hander Kapono Zukevich spaced six hits as the Bulldogs improved to 1-2 and the Trojans fell to 3-1. Zukevich struck out three and walked two in going the seven-inning distance.
"He was consistent and kept the ball low," Bulldogs coach Herbert Onizuka said. "He had them hitting it into the ground and popping it up."
Waialua scored twice in the first. Brandie Cacal singled, starting the game with one of his three hits. Jacob Delacruz then reached on an error, and both advanced on a balk. Daryl Lorenzo hit a sacrifice fly to right, scoring Cacal, and Kawika Benz plated Delacruz with a single.
Cacal also sparked the Bulldogs' two other rallies, stealing two bases and scoring three runs.

Campbell 3, Aiea 2: At North Road Park, Spencer Aguinaldo doubled home Keala Noda with the go-ahead run in the bottom of the sixth inning as the Sabers earned their first victory against three losses. Na Alii dropped to 3-1.
With the game tied at 2, Noda led off with a single and was sacrificed to second by Dru Nakasone, setting up Aguinaldo's big hit.
Mark Pinho won in relief and Keoni Kapana got the last out with two runners on for the save.
Joey Johnson started and pitched into the sixth for Campbell while Derek Akimoto went the distance for Aiea. Each team managed six hits.

Waianae 15, Waipahu 1: At Waipahu, Philip Sarono pitched a two-hitter in a game abbreviated to five innings because of the 10-run rule, leading the Seariders to their fourth victory without a loss.
Sarono struck out two and walked none in dropping the Marauders to 0-4.
Waianae, which hit four home runs, put the game away with a six-run first inning and a four-run second.
Waipahu's only hits were a home run by Joseph Moananu and a single by Andrew Acino, both in the fourth inning.

Kalani 14, Kaimuki 3: At Kaimuki, winning pitcher Robert Shimabuku was one of five Falcons with two or more hits.
Kalani improved to 2-0 while the Bulldogs fell to 0-2.

Kalaheo 12, Farrington 0: At DeSa Field, Kalai Rodenhurst pitched a one-hitter over five innings as the Mustangs improved to 2-0 and the Governors dropped to 0-2.
Kaniela Denis' grand-slam highlighted a seven-run first inning.
Brandon Parris got an infield single in the fifth for Farrington's only hit.

Roosevelt 16, Kaiser 6: At Kaiser, the Rough Riders roughed up the Cougars with 12 hits and 10 walks to improve to 2-0. Kaiser fell to 1-1.
Roosevelt led 7-6 with two out in the sixth, then added four more runs in the inning, with Adrian Mols' 2-run double the big blow. In the seventh, Chad Kapanui blasted a three-run homer and Kurt Murata a two-run shot to put it out of reach.
Brandon Tanabe was the winning pitcher.

Pearl City 8, Radford 5: At Pearl City, Brandon Bell's two-run single and bunt singles by Bucky Mow and Gavin Seo keyed the unbeaten Chargers' decisive four-run rally in the sixth inning.
Reliever Ryan Touchi worked five strong innings for the victory and Sean Yamashita closed out Pearl City's fourth win.
Matthew Manuma had two hits and three runs batted in for the Rams (1-3).

McKinley 5, Castle 4: Curtis Kurahara had three hits, including a leadoff single in the visiting Tigers' two-run sixth-inning comeback from a 4-3 deficit.
After Kurahara's single and a double by David Kurahashi, McKinley (1-1) scored the tying run on a squeeze bunt and the go-ahead run on the front end of a double steal.
Matt Ramie homered for Castle (0-2) off winning pitcher Zachary Lui.
