as NL baseball returns to MilwaukeeMILWAUKEE -- On the day National League baseball returned to Milwaukee for the first time in 33 years, the Brewers won with some American League long ball.
Jeromy Burnitz and Jose Valentin homered and the Brewers won their sixth straight, beating the winless Montreal Expos, 6-4, yesterday before 51,408 at County Stadium.
The Brewers are tied for the NL lead with 11 homers, including four each by Burnitz and Valentin.
The Expos fell to 0-7, extending their worst start in their 30-year history.
Home run king Hank Aaron threw out the first ball, a one-hopper to the plate. It was the first NL game in Milwaukee since Sept. 22, 1965, when the Braves lost to the Los Angeles Dodgers in 11 innings. They moved to Atlanta the following season.
The Brewers, who moved from Seattle to Milwaukee before the 1970 season, started the season with a 5-1 road trip, and yesterday's crowd was the biggest for a County Stadium opener in four seasons.
Former University of Hawaii star Scott Karl (1-0), who started last season with five consecutive losses, gave up two earned runs and seven hits in 613 innings to earn the victory. He left with a 5-2 lead in the seventh after experiencing two unusual pops in his throwing shoulder. He will be examined today.
