Kai Austin and Chad Gianetti combined on a two-hitter as Punahou rallied to defeat St. Louis, 5-3, last night in a key Interscholastic League of Honolulu baseball game at Ala Wai Field.

The win lifted the Buffanblu to 6-1 midway through the league's revised 14-game schedule. The Crusaders fell to 3-2-1.

Austin, a left-hander, struck out 10. He threw 106 pitches in four innings before giving way to Gianetti. The 6-foot, 185-pound right-hander, whose fastball was clocked at 86 mph during his three innings of relief, struck out five, including the last two swinging, to get the victory.

St. Louis scored three runs (two in the first, one in the second) during Austin's stint, but only one was earned -- when Kalvin Koverman tripled home Jandin Thornton-Murray in the first inning.

Austin was at his best in the second inning. He jammed slugger Chad Santos with a full-count curveball, striking him out with the bases loaded.

"I think he was expecting a fastball and I came right under his hands," Austin said.

Then, after getting ahead 0-2 against Koverman, Austin got him to line out to third.

Santos, St. Louis' starter, struck out six, allowed three hits and walked two while shutting out Punahou for five innings. But two wild pitches and an RBI-triple by Larry Oshiro chased Santos in the sixth.

Right-hander Thornton-Murray, who took the loss, took over with the Crusaders leading, 3-2. But Chad Sakamoto legged out a triple that drove in Oshiro with the tying run. And in the seventh, Keola Ane punched a single into right field, driving in pinch runner Greg Shimokawa with the winning run. Blair Suzuki scored an insurance run on a fielder's choice.

Oshiro and Sakamoto each had two hits for Punahou, with Oshiro knocking in a pair of runs.

bullet Kamehameha 11, UHBA 1: At Ala Wai, the Sardinha brothers -- Bronson and Duke -- drove in three runs apiece and Paki Lum clubbed a two-run homer as the Warriors (4-2) topped UHBA (1-5).

Mana Cambra added two hits for Kamehameha. Mike Ganialongo, Chris Gibo and Nolan Sakai each went 2-for-2 for UHBA.

bullet Iolani 10, Maryknoll 7: At Iolani, RBI-triples by Jeff Iwashita and Marvin Wong keyed a four-run first inning as the Raiders (4-2-1) topped the Spartans (1-5).

Iwashita, Wong, Douglas Jackson and Scott Tajima each had two hits for Iolani. Tajima also had three RBIs.
