Ham it up for a hearty,
festive meal that’s a bargain

Four ham types are holiday best buys -- smoked or cooked whole, smoked half, 5-pound canned, and spiral sliced. Prices range from 99 cents to $3.99 per pound.

At the low end, Star Markets check in with Farmer John smoked 16- to 18-pound whole hams at 99 cents a pound with a $15 purchase; limit one per person. Without the extra purchase, it's $1.39 per pound.

Other whole-ham numbers: Discount club members can buy Farmer John for $1.47 and $1.49 per pound at Sack N Save and Times Super Market, respectively; and at Safeway, $2.19 for Smok-A-Rama boneless and $3.69 for Hormel boneless. Also, Farmer John is $1.59 at IGH (Independent Grocers of Hawaii) stores.

Cook's smoked picnic half is $1.57 per pound to Sack N Save Maika'i Club members ($1.79 to nonmembers), and Farmer John halves at Star Markets cost $1.59 for shank and $1.79 for butt.

Five-pound canned hams are $6.99 with Star coupon and, for discount clubbers, $7.87 at Sack N Save, $7.88 at Foodland, $8.99 at Times, and $9.99 at Safeway.

For ham eaters in the round, spiral-sliced half ham is $2.49 a pound at Star, and $2.97 at Foodland and Sack N Save.

Dress ham with a glaze 30 minutes before it's finished baking.

Mustard honey glaze: Combine 1/2 cup honey, 1 tablespoon mustard and 1/4 cup soy sauce.

Peanut honey glaze: Mix 1/2 cup honey with 1/2 cup smooth peanut butter.

Pineapple glaze: To 1 cup crushed pineapple, add 1/2 cup brown sugar and 2 tablespoons lemon juice.

Booze glaze: Mix 1/4 cup red wine with 1/4 cup bourbon. Add 1 cup brown sugar and 2 tablespoons grated orange peel.
