Looking beyond the latest trend

April Rutherford has been named "advertising person of the year" by the Honolulu Advertising Federation. She sees advertising as basic creativity.

"Trends come and go but the one constant is a great idea and a great concept," Rutherford said.

In her 17 years in advertising, Rutherford has won more than a dozen Pele awards and other honors for entertainment ads and her campaign to help the Hawaiian Film Festival. The poster for the Film Festival is one of her favorite works.

After earning a bachelor's degree in fine arts from the School of Visual Arts in New York, Rutherford worked in Los Angeles and Portland, Ore.

Her 1982 move to Hawaii led to jobs with Gib Black Advertising Group Inc., Nick Kaars & Associates Inc., Hawaiiana Advertising Agency and Ogilvy & Mather Hawaii. She joined ADWorks six months ago.
