United Air gets tough on carry-on bag limit

United Airlines will tighten its carry-on baggage rules. Starting May 15, it will count a purse, a laptop computer, a briefcase or similar items as one bag in the two-bag limit.

The strict rule will apply to all United flights in North America, including its mainland-Hawaii service, the airline said.

The airline said it also will enforce its size limit for carry-on bags. They must be no bigger than 45 inches in length, width and height combined.

The policy follows a six-month test in Des Moines which United said resulted in faster turnaround and better on-time performance.

Cabin crews also want to see less baggage in the passenger compartment, for safety reasons.

At least two other airlines, Northwest and Delta, say they plan similar restrictions, according to Bloomberg News.

Ford plans to install side air bags in all cars

NEW YORK -- Ford Motor Co. plans to offer side air bags on all its cars starting with its luxury models, making it the first major American automaker to make the safety devices so widely available.

Ford Automotive Operations President Jac Nasser said today that all Ford car models will have the air bags within three years.

Beneficial, Household in $9 billion merger

Beneficial Corp. and Household International Inc., which have competed with each other to provide loans to low- and middle-income American consumers for most of this century, said they would merge to create a lender with more than 30 million customers.

Though dwarfed by the size of the record deal announced a day earlier by Citicorp and Travelers Group Inc., the Beneficial-Household merger would be one of the biggest in the business of consumer finance.

Based on the value of each company's shares before the all-stock transaction was announced yesterday, it would be worth nearly $9 billion.
