Newcomer makes mark in Zagat

A Valley Isle newcomer and a Lanai classic have garnered top honors in the "Zagat Survey 1998 Hawaii Restaurants," released Thursday.

Both chef/owner David "D.K." Kodama's Sansei Seafood Restaurant & Sushi Bar in Kapalua, Maui, and the Lodge at Koele on Lanai scored a state-high 28 out 30 points.

More than 1,800 volunteer surveyors rated 540 local restaurants.

"It's quickly become 'Maui's best,' " the survey says of the Sansei.

Most popular restaurants are, in order, on Oahu: Alan Wong's, Roy's, Sam Choy's Diamond Head, 3660 On The Rise and Hy's Steak House; Merriman's on the Big Island; and Lodge at Koele on Lanai. A Pacific Cafe was most popular on Kauai and Maui, and No. 8 on Oahu.

The "Zagat" guide is sold at bookstores for $9.95. Or call 1 (800) 333-3421.
