Name: Marivell Bautista
Age: 18
School: Radford High
Favorite subject: Calculus, English
Pastimes: Relaxing with friends, family
Future: Biomedical engineer

Her family comes first

Wealth, travel and power are aspirations for some, but all Marivell Bautista is looking for is happiness.

True happiness, according to Bautista, comes from having a loving family, good friends and a few goals.

Personal fulfillment was always stressed in her family, Bautista said.

"There's always been an emphasis on just being happy, and I guess I've done things in my life to help me reach that goal."

For example, choosing a career in biomedical engineering.

The job will satisfy her love of math as well as ensure a secure financial future for the family she hopes one day to have.

To make this dream a reality, Bautista must go to college.

She now maintains a 4.0 grade point average and is actively involved in groups such as the National Honor Society and Interact.

She is also the student government's first vice president, volunteers, holds a steady job and competed in Hawaii's Junior Miss Pageant.

"I would consider her the most valuable student in terms of always being there to help and to lead other students," said Cliff Fukuda, student activities coordinator.

"Marivell ... is always positive and highly dependable."

Bautista said her long days will someday reap the rewards she seeks.

"I guess I've learned to manage," she said.
