Getting accustomed to Hawaii

Nat H. Aycox has taken over management of U.S. Customs Service operations statewide.

He said his goal here is to make a "well-run port" even better without slowing down movement of goods.

The agency has 183 employees in Hawaii, which last year saw some 1,000 ships arrive from foreign ports, and which has the nation's fifth-busiest international airport.

Last year the agency collected $45 million in customs duties and taxes in Hawaii on imported goods.

Aycox has 27 years' experience in customs work. Most recently he headed the canine drug detector program in Washington, D.C. He also has worked at the Los Angeles International Airport and Los Angeles Harbor, where he rose to chief inspector.

He earned a bachelor's degree in biological science from Whittier College.
