Star-BulletinThe Honolulu Star-Bulletin won 13 awards for writing and photography in the annual Hawaii Publishers Association competition, including a sweep of first, second and third place for coverage of breaking news. The Pa'i awards were presented in 19 categories yesterday. Entries were judged by professionals on the mainland.

Other Pa'i plaques went for:First prize for spot news reporting for stories when Gov. Ben Cayetano ordered an investigation into Kamehameha Schools/Bishop Estate. Reporters were Debra Barayuga, Rick Daysog, Gregg Kakesako, Ian Lind, Mike Yuen and Rod Ohira.
First place in color feature photography (newsprint stock) for Ken Ige's depiction of the Haiku Stairs.
First place in black-and-white feature photography (newsprint stock) for Dennis Oda's coverage of the Ironman competition finishers.
First place in essay photography (newsprint stock) for art of Hawaii prisoners in Texas by Dennis Oda.
No awards were presented in the editorial opinion category because the entries were lost in shipment to mainland judges.Second place in spot news for stories on the Gabriel Kealoha manslaughter ruling by Linda Hosek, Alan Matsuoka and Rod Ohira.
Third place in spot news for a report on the death of UH football player Shannon Smith by Paul Arnett.
Second place in editorial features for a story on barge day at Kalaupapa by Mary Adamski.
Second place in editorial series for pieces on same-sex unions in Denmark and the Netherlands by Linda Hosek.
Third place for editorial columns to Honolulu Lite columnist Charles Memminger.
Third place for sports reporting for a story on the 10th anniversary of Wahine volleyball championship by Cindy Luis.
Second place for black-and-white feature photography (newsprint stock) for Haiku stairs shots by Ken Ige.
Second place for excellence in illustration for Kip Aoki's presentation of privatization poll results.
Honorable mention in essay photography for Kathryn Bender's work on a taro patch project.
