The Honolulu Symphony and University of Hawaii-Manoa's Department of Theatre and Dance will collaborate for the first time 4 p.m. Sunday when the UH dancers perform "Faun," Vaslav Nijinsky's erotic dance, originally choreographed in 1912.

The Blaisdell Concert Hall performance will repeat at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. "Faun" also will be performed as part of Kennedy Theatre's "Creative Feature!" April 17-26.

Nijinsky was one of the most celebrated and innovative ballet artist and choreographer to emerge in the early 20th century. "Faun" was among the most controversial dances to be performed when it premiered in Paris in 1912, largely due to its erotic nature and break from conservative dance traditions.

The dance will be followed by Israeli cellist Matt Haimovitz performing Saint-Saens Violoncello Concerto No. 1 in A minor, Op. 33; Ravel's Ma Mere l'Oye (Mother Goose) and Daphnis et Chloe: Suite No. 2.

It is also cellist Haimovitz's first appearance with the symphony. Haimovitz first came to public attention in 1985 after making his debut with the Israel Philharmonic conducted by the Zubin Mehta.

His approach to traditional and contemporary masterworks has received universal praise for interpretive insight, flawless technique and burnished tone.

Tickets are $15, $22, $27.50, $35 and $47.50, available at the Blaisdell and Connection outlets. A hundred $5 tickets will be available the day of the concert, until an hour before the show. Purchases must be in-person, cash only at the Blaisdell box office. Call 538-8863 for availability.

There will also be an open rehearsal 7 to 9:30 p.m. Saturday at the concert hall.
