A helpful phone list for you to clip and keep

It's April Fool's Day, but this is no joke. Here's an updated and revised list of some helpful numbers and addresses.

We can't keep repeating them, so please clip and save!

Abandoned vehicles: To report abandoned or derelict vehicles on public streets, 733-2530.

Airports: For noise and other airport concerns, 24-hour hot line, 1-888-697-7813.

Animal nuisance complaints: Roosters, barking dogs, etc.: Hawaiian Humane Society, 946-2187, extension 280.

Better Business Bureau of Hawaii: The latest on scams, to check a company/charity's record or to file complaints, 536-6956.

Birth/death/divorce certificates: State Health Department, Vital Statistics Office, 586-4333.

Book/magazine donations: Friends of the Library, 536-4174.

Bulky item pickup: New four-

week schedule in effect for Honolulu, from Foster Village to Kalama Valley: 523-4685. Other areas, call district number listed in telephone book under bulky item.

Credit ratings: To check your rating: TRW, 800-392-1122; Trans Union, 316-636-6100; or Equifax, 800-685-1111.

Child Seat Hotline: To report toddlers not in car safety seats: 1-800-868-7300.

Computer donations: Old computers will be repaired for use in the public schools. Coordinated by The Detwiler Foundation in California for the DOE, 1-800-939-6000.

Consumer affairs: For consumer-related complaints/questions, state Office of Consumer Protection, 587-3222.

Christmas cards: Christmas Card Lady Helen Daniels of Kailua has retired. Taking her place in using old cards to make scrapbooks for hospitalized children: Carolyn Fu, P.O. Box 1589, Waianae 96792; and Cindy Delgado, 47-158 Lile Pl., Kaneohe 96744. Also, cards can be sent to East Oahu Realty, c/o Yvonne Hepton, 6600 Kalanianaole Hwy., #114, where volunteers will trim the cards.

Junk mail: To stop the unwanted flow, write to Mail Preference Service, c/o Direct Marketing Association, P.O. Box 9008, Farmingdale, N.Y. 11735-9008.

Landlord/tenant problems: Office of Consumer Protection, 586-2630.

"Live Aloha" bumper stickers: Write to Live Aloha, 165 Waokanaka Place, Honolulu 96817. No charge, but donations welcomed.

Microwave ovens/TVs/VCRs: Donate items to The Community Clearinghouse, 845-1669/842-6580 or call Honolulu Community College teacher Paul Jacoby, 845-9459. Students will repair appliances for the Clearinghouse for the needy.

Neighborhood Justice Center: To resolve disputes between neighbors, 521-6767.

Noise complaints: For stationary objects, state Noise and Radiation Branch, 586-4700.

Potholes: Report potholes on state roads, 536-7852; city ruts, 527-6006.

Tobacco Prevention and Education Project, state Department of Health: Get list of smoke-free restaurants, information about smoking laws, 586-4613.

Recycling hot line (city): Recycling center information, 527-5335.

Sanitation complaints: State Sanitation Branch, 586-8000.

Sidewalks, overgrown lots, other housing-code violations: City Building Department, 527-6308.

Telemarketing calls: To stop telephone solicitations, write to Telephone Preference Service, P.O. Box 9014, Farmingdale, N.Y. 11735-9014. Written requests only.

Rats and other unwanted creatures: State Vector Control, 831-6767.

Waste Water Hotline: To report water waste by an individual, business or government agency, Board of Water Supply, 527-6126.
