THE fund-raiser is called "Tuxes and Tails," but that doesn't mean men have to dress up in monkey suits, as they were called in gentler times. That's because Saturday night's event is meant to raise money for the Hawaiian Humane Society, where many of the transient inhabitants come equipped with tails. The St. John boutique fashion show following the silent auction and dinner at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel will feature models accompanied by dogs. I can hear the banter along the runway now: "Lucky dog!" But Pam Jones of Schuler Homes, who is chairing the event, was given a "paws down" from the hotel when she wanted to include her pet in the event. No matter how much time Pam spends grooming and training her pet, Destiny, she was told she had to leave him at home. There will be a "No Horses" rule in effect that night ...

THIS Saturday's Miss Kauai Pageant will be celebrating its 50th anniversary. Former Miss Kauai Holly Wong is producing the pageant at the Kauai Outrigger Hotel. It's a preliminary to the Miss Hawaii pageant, and will be emceed this year by Channel 2's Ron Mizutani and former Miss Hawaii Luana Alapa-Hee ... Meanwhile, Miss Oahu Noella Callejo, a 19-year-old BYU-Hawaii student, is preparing for the Miss Hawaii pageant June 12. Two former contest winners, Aulii Stone Chung (Mrs. Hawaii '97) and sister Lani Stone Kaaa (Miss Hawaii '91), produced the pageant ...

Eggs Bunny-dict

THE folks at the Kakaako Senior Center have decided to give restaurateur Don Murphy their Easter Bunny Award. Murphy, who owns and operates Murphy's Bar & Grill downtown, was one of the Star-Bulletin's "Ten Who Made a Difference" in 1997, and he hasn't seemed to let up yet. What he's now doing is providing a first class Easter Brunch for some 50 seniors at the Kakaako Center, and with wife Marion's culinary assistance, will be whipping up something like "Eggs Bunny-dict." ...

WHEN Dennis Alessio of the Marshall Islands asked Kapiolani Community College if there'd be any volunteers for his demonstration on traditional Marshallese tattooing at the school tomorrow, he thought a few students might be interested. But to his surprise, the first to step up was KCC Assistant Dean of Instruction Louise Pagotto, and other faculty members may join her ...

A helping hand for MS

SOME years ago, Eddie Tanori was hit head on by a drunk driver in a truck and all but left for dead. Still, he recovered, only to contract trauma-induced multiple sclerosis. Now confined to a wheelchair, Tanori spends most of his waking hours helping others, having staged 16 benefits in the past year through Tanori Productions, which he calls a "no profit" company. Beginning 8 p.m. Saturday morning he's holding an MS walk and concert at the Honolulu Zoo, featuring many entertainers including UH football guard Gary Krug, who's 6-4 and weighs 280, but sings falsetto like an angel. Then Saturday night, Brother Walter headlines a dance concert at the Hawaiian Hut, with all proceeds going to the local Hawaii MS group. Here's a chance to walk and dance for those who can't ...
