Rainbows fifth in
volleyball rankings

The University of Hawaii men's volleyball team slipped one notch to fifth place in the latest Volleyball Magazine Top 10 poll despite a pair of one-sided victories over Stanford last weekend.

Ohio State (21-1) vaulted from fifth to first in the rankings, followed by UCLA (20-3), Pepperdine (15-3), Brigham Young (13-3) and Hawaii (18-5).

Pepperdine held the top spot a week ago.

Stanford (12-6) dropped from sixth to seventh, changing places with Long Beach State (16-6).

Lewis (20-7), Indiana-Purdue at Fort Wayne (15-3) and Loyola-Chicago (21-6) round out the Top 10.

BYUH WOMEN UNBEATEN: Brigham Young-Hawaii's defending national champion women's tennis team swept Westmont (Calif.) College, 8-0, yesterday at Laie for their 19th victory without a loss this season.

HPU'S LONO HONORED: Second baseman Jarnett Lono of the Hawaii Pacific softball team was named to the Cal State University-Hayward Pioneer Classic all-tournament team yesterday.

Lono batted .375 (9-for-24) and scored seven runs in the tournament as the Sea Warriors won four of seven games.

HPU ALSO STRONG AT NET: Hawaii Pacific University's men's tennis team is No. 4 and Brigham Young-Hawaii's men are seventh in the NAIA's latest national rankings announced yesterday.

The Sea Warriors (15-2) and Seasiders (12-5) tangle for the third time this season tomorrow at 2 p.m. in Laie.

HPU won the first two meetings.

BYUH blanked Chaminade, 5-0, yesterday.

The Sea Warriors are paced by sophomore Eric Sandblom (16-2), ranked fifth in the NAIA in singles, and his brother Johan, a junior, ranked 45th with a 15-2 mark.

The HPU women's team, led by the 13th-ranked doubles tandem of Patricia Pontes and Cecelia Daniellson, is ranked 13th.

COACHING OPENINGS: Lutheran High School of the Interscholastic League of Honolulu needs coaches to fill the following positions: JV boys basketball, JV boys volleyball, JV girls volleyball, JV and varsity boys bowling, JV and varsity girls bowling, and JV and varsity cheerleading.
