UH COED SAILORS ON TOP: The University of Hawaii coed sailing team won the New England Intercollegiate Sailing Association Team Race yesterday at Kingston, R.I.
Skippers Brent Harrill, Jeff Nelson and Garrett Woodworth and crew members Terry Mott, June Tomizawa and Len Yonemura compiled a 16-5 record for the nationally 14th-ranked Rainbows in the eight-school regatta.
Fourth-ranked Tufts was second at 14-7, followed by No. 10 Connecticut College (13-8) and No. 16 Georgetown (11-10)
The University of Rhode Island hosted the two-day regatta.
The Rainbows will stay on the East Coast to compete for the Harvard-hosted Boston Dinghy Cup Saturday and Sunday.
U.S. CHESS CHAMPIONSHIPS AT KONA: The United States Open Chess Tournament will be contested at the Kona Surf Resort and Country Club on the Big Island Aug. 1-9.
The U.S. Chess Foundation's 99th Open likely will draw more than 500 amateur and professional players to vie for $20,000. Players from Europe, South America and the Pacific Rim will participate along with American standouts.
Current champion Alex Yermolinsky is expected to defend his title.
It will be the first time the event is held in Hawaii and only the second time ever it will be outside the continental U.S.
The tournament will coincide with the annual convention of the USCF, which has more than 80,0000 members.
Participants must be members of the USCF and there is a $99 entry fee. Admission for spectators will be free of charge.
SOCCER TOURNEY WINNERS: Hilo defeated Mililani, 3-1, in the boys' Division 1 championship game and Pearl City outscored Diamond Head, 6-5, for the girls' Division 1 title yesterday in the finals of the Kirk Banks Soccer Tournament at Kapiolani Park.
Other boys' title teams were West Kauai (Division 2), Diamond Head (Division 3) and East Kauai (Division 4).
Other girls' winners were Honolulu (Division 2), Hilo No. 1 (Division 3) and Honolulu (Division 4).
