Private investigator John Caine, a retired U.S. naval officer, is asked to help his friend, Vice Admiral Winston MacGruder III, find his daughter's killer. Caine must find a way to avoid letting the girl's death hurt the admiral's political career, yet, bring the killer to justice.

"Dancing the Waves and Other Poems": Steven Curry, $10.95, 64 pages, Anoai Press

Works present Curry's thoughts about his love of the ocean, with some excerpts from Rumi.

"Exiles From Time: Stories of Hawaii": Ian MacMillan, $12.95, 147 pages, Anoai Press

Six short stories reflect life in Hawaii. Stories include one about a family trying to rid their home of termites and one about a person asked to help a neighbor die.

"From the Isle of Skye to the Isle of Maui": William Benton Patterson, M.D., $14.95, 380 pages, Vantage Press Inc.

Patterson's memoir reflects his years as a plantation doctor and his research of the pathological physiology of high blood pressure, its prevention and cure. Patterson moved to Hawaii in 1939 and founded the Maui Medical Group.

"No Ordinary Man: William Francis Quinn, His Role in Hawaii's History": Mary C. Kahulumana Richards, $28, 330 pages, Hawaii Education Association

Biography of Hawaii's last appointed Territorial Governor and first elected state Governor.

"Plantation Boy": Milton Murayama, $24.95, 181 pages, University of Hawai'i Press

Murayama continues the story of the Oyama family. Toshio, the eldest son, marries and tries to escape the environment that continues to oppress him.
