Star-BulletinUniversity of Hawaii head baseball coach Les Murakami hoped the 23rd Rainbow Easter Tournament would afford him the opportunity to give his reserves more playing time.
Last night he was able to use 15 position players and six pitchers, although the latter was more out of necessity.
The Rainbows (21-11) and Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo (7-23) were coming off tough weekend conference series, leaving them with a noticeable void -- starting pitching: The 10 hurlers in Hawaii's 17-3 victory at Rainbow Stadium last night had pitched strictly in relief this season.
"He (Cal Poly head coach Ritch Price) didn't have any pitching and we didn't either. Seems like we got better down the line pitching," Murakami said.
But the Rainbows won the battle of the bullpens because their pitchers were more adept at finding the strike zone. UH allowed three walks, and the Mustangs walked 12 batters, eight of which scored. They also hit five UH batters.
"That was the key, throwing strikes," Murakami said. "We've had such rough games the last month. I think you kind of look forward to something like this."
The Rainbows also collected 17 hits, their second highest total of the season.
Jamie Aloy and Darren Blakely each had three hits, and Michael Dartt and Joe Whitsett had a pair of safeties.
Hawaii turned a 3-1 lead into a 9-1 advantage with a six-run third inning. From then on, only the final score was in question.
In the third inning, Lars Hansen had an RBI triple, Dartt an RBI double and Tracy Nakano a two-run single.
Murakami experimented by starting freshman Brandon Martin at second base. Martin played some shortstop in high school, but usually plays the outfield.
"He's got some juice (at the plate) and I just wanted to try him," Murakami said. "He's a hungry player and I don't want him to get rusty."

Michael Dartt slides safely into home plate.
Martin had a strange night at the plate. He walked three times, twice was hit by a pitch and singled home two runs in his only official at-bat in the seventh."It's tough to go from the outfield to the infield," Martin said. "It's the long throw versus the short throw. I've just got to take my time and be smooth."
Aloy will start on the mound for UH in tonight's game against Lewis-Clark State, with Patrick McNair scheduled to start against the University of Hawaii at Hilo tomorrow.
Freshman right-hander Gavin Garrick pitched one inning, allowing a hit and fanning two.
Garrick is still trying to recapture his form. He was throwing in the high 80s and low 90s (mph) before suffering an injury during his junior year in high school.
"He's worked real hard to regain his strength. He's ahead of the game," UH pitching coach Carl Furutani said. "He had good command of his breaking pitch tonight. Right now it's good for his confidence to have one good inning."
Lewis-Clark State 9, Nebraska 3: The Warriors (16-6) used three doubles, a triple and Kendrick Wallace's two-run single to score six runs in a fourth-inning rally.
The Cornhuskers (7-7) took a 2-0 lead in the first on triples by Bryan Schmidt and Ken Harvey and Cliff Durham's groundout.
Hawaii-Hilo 5, Wright State 0: Right-hander Tyler Yates pitched a five-hit complete game for the Vulcans (10-20), who are 9-5 in their last 14 games following a 1-15 start.
UHH took control with a four-run sixth inning. Scott Wallis and Clinton Vaughan started the uprising with doubles. Vaughan stole home on the front end of a double steal and Shaye Miura and Layne Takahashi knocked in runs.
Dusty Bean had two hits for the Raiders (10-7).
